Brandon and I had hoped for children for years.

When we learned twins were on the way it felt like receiving something we had waited a long time for.

I said: I would protect myself and our daughters if I needed to.

I said: I need a partner. Not someone who escapes when things are hard and tells me to handle it.

He said: I didn’t mean it like that.

It didn’t fix itself overnight.

Some fishing trips last four days and change everything.

Some lists get written during night feedings by women who are deciding what they’re willing to accept.

Some bags get packed not for leaving that day but for knowing the door exists.

And some doorways stop people dead because what’s inside is not what they expected to come home to.
