He said: and she left with a bill.

Melissa said: what do you want me to do?

He said: I want you to understand that this cannot happen again. Not the bill. Not the task-assigning. Not the lazy grandmother comment.

He said: I want you to understand that how you treat the people who love our children is what our children are going to learn about how to treat people.

He said: Hazel and Marcus were watching.

He said: they watch everything.

Melissa said: I know they do.

She said: I know.

She said: Jason.

He said: yes.

She said: I was overwhelmed. When you leave.

He said: I know.

She said: I don’t manage well when you’re gone.

He said: I know that too.

He said: but the solution is not to invite my mother here and then give her a bill.

She said: no.

Jason looked at me.

I said: Melissa.

She looked at me.

I said: I have been a parent for thirty-eight years.

She said: yes.

She said: I heard voices.

She said: will you come again?

I said: yes.

She said: at Christmas?

She said: good.

She went back to her book.

Marcus continued the drawing of Jupiter with its faint rings.

Outside the kitchen window the morning was bright and ordinary, the specific ordinary of a summer Saturday in a subdivision of similar houses with similar lawns.

I made breakfast.

From scratch, the way I made most things.

The way my mother had taught me.

The way I had tried to teach Jason.

The way I hoped, in time and with patience and with the specific persistence of someone who understood that the long game was the only game that mattered, Hazel and Marcus would learn.
