My mother was diagnosed when I was fifteen.

Part 4 — My Father

My father called the next morning.

He said: Claire. I owe you an apology.

I said: yes.

He said: I saw what Diane was wearing and I should have said something before you came downstairs.

I said: you knew?

He was quiet for a moment.

He said: I saw it when she got dressed. I told myself it wasn’t what I thought it was.

I said: it was exactly what you thought it was.

He said: I know.

He said: Marcus said something to me after you left.

I said: what did he say?

He said: he said your mother worked on that dress during her last good weeks. He said she chose every bead by hand.

He said: I knew that. I watched her do it.

He said: and I stood in the living room.

He said: Claire.

I said: I know. She made sure I would.

Part 5 — Helen

I called Helen the following week.

She was in her seventies and still sewed and still thought about my mother regularly.

I told her about prom.

She was quiet for a moment.

I said: yes. Probably not repeatable.

Helen laughed.

I said: that sounds exactly right.

Helen said: it is exactly right. She said it often.

She said: Claire.

I said: yes.

She said: wear it again sometime. Not just for special occasions.

She said: your mother didn’t make it for special occasions. She made it so you’d have something of hers.

She said: that doesn’t require an occasion.

I said: yes.

I said: you’re right.

I said: I’ll wear it to dinner sometime.

Helen said: perfect.

She said: put a sweater over it if you need to.

She said: but wear it.
