Twelve days after my husband died, I caught my neighbor climbing over my fence with bags full of his apples. I thought she wanted the fruit—until she mentioned a secret from 27 years ago.

My husband, Daniel, treated our apple trees like members of the family.

Every September, he walked through the garden with a pair of pruning shears in his back pocket, inspecting branches and turning apples in his palm as if they might tell him when they were ready.

“When it’s ready, you won’t have to fight for it.”

That afternoon, our eight-year-old son, Ben, followed him from tree to tree with a basket.

“Not that one,” Daniel said when Ben reached for a bright red apple.

Ben frowned. “It looks ready.”

“Looks can lie. Give it a little twist.”

Ben tried again. The apple stayed firmly on the branch.

“See?” Daniel smiled. “When it’s ready, you won’t have to fight for it.”

She had known Daniel years before I met him.

I wanted to hold on to afternoons like that.

Daniel had been tired more often lately, and although neither of us said much about it in front of the children, I had started watching him too closely. How long he rested after climbing the ladder. Whether he finished dinner. How often he rubbed his chest when he thought I wasn’t looking.

“I wasn’t.”

Our neighbor Monica stood on the other side, looking through the branches. At fifty, she was always perfectly put together, even when she was supposedly gardening.

Daniel had mentioned it casually when Monica inherited her parents’ old house and moved back next door nearly nine years earlier.

Minutes later, a van pulled up in Monica’s driveway, and a young man climbed out carrying a toolbox. He’d been around her house several times that summer.

“Your plumber’s back,” I said.

Monica glanced toward him. “Old houses. There’s always something.”

The man looked over and lifted a hand.

Daniel returned the gesture, then kept staring for another second.

“What?” I asked.

“Nothing.” Daniel rubbed his jaw. “He just reminds me of someone.”

“Who?”

Daniel looked again, but the man had disappeared inside Monica’s house.

Daniel rested one hand on our son’s shoulder and looked up through the branches. “These trees will keep feeding you, even when I’m gone.”

“What?” He gave me that familiar smile. “Trees live a long time.”

“Then talk about them living a long time. Not you disappearing.”

He squeezed my hand when I joined them.

I stopped.

“What are you doing?”

Another rustle came from behind the apple trees.

“Mom?” Ben whispered.

I handed him the house keys and walked toward the garden.

Monica was halfway over our fence, her flowered blouse caught on a nail. Two large bags sat on our side of the fence, bulging with Daniel’s apples and pears.

For several seconds, neither of us spoke.

“Well, he’s not here now, is he?”

“No. My children eat those. Their father grew them.”

Ben was only a few feet behind me, still holding Daniel’s cap. I saw his fingers tighten around the brim.

I stepped between him and Monica.

“Leave the fruit and go.”

“No. You clearly meant something.”

Monica climbed back over the fence.

That night, I almost convinced myself Daniel must have mentioned it to her sometime after she moved next door.

Before sunrise, Ben shook my shoulder. “Mom… come outside. I heard a scary noise, and it woke me up.”

I kissed his forehead and pulled on a robe.

“I’m not lying. I was never Daniel’s mistress. Not once during your marriage.”

“Then how did you know about the red light?”

Still, something didn’t fit.

Her jaw tightened. “Because he was on his way to see me.”

I stared at her. “What?”

“We were supposed to meet that night. He never showed up. Later, I found out he’d taken some woman he’d hit in a crosswalk to the hospital.”

Her eyes flicked toward the house.

I suddenly understood why Monica had known the one detail Daniel and I had kept between ourselves all those years.

“You were dating him.”

“Yes.”

“And after he met me?”

“He ended it.”

Her voice held no triumph. Still, something didn’t fit.

I looked at Monica’s house. The house she’d inherited from her parents and moved back into nine years earlier. The house from which she’d watched our children grow up and Daniel work in his garden.

I stepped closer. “You say you weren’t his mistress. Fine. Then why spend all these years watching my husband, my children, our life? Why steal his harvest twelve days after he died?”

For a second, he looked so much like Daniel when he was nervous that I forgot how to breathe.

“Daniel was my father.”

“The apples.”

Monica blinked. “What?”

I noticed the open garage behind her.

“When Luke came here, I thought we’d finally do it. Then Daniel died before Luke even got the chance to speak to him.” She looked toward my garden. “I watched you come home from the funeral with his children. Ben was holding Daniel’s cap…”

I carried it next door.

“Ben is his son.”

“So is Luke!” Monica pressed a hand over her mouth. “I know it wasn’t your fault. Maybe I’ve always known. But at that moment, I wanted you to lose something of Daniel’s too. Just once.”

I stared at her. “So you took everything.”

“Yes.”

It didn’t make what she’d done right. But finally, it made sense.

“I don’t forgive what you did.”

The following week passed in a fog.

I barely left the house, trying to make sense of everything Daniel had left behind.

Then Ben found a few apples Monica had missed on the highest branches. We picked them together, and I baked Daniel’s favorite apple pie.

That evening, Ben and I carried it next door.

Monica stared at us when she opened the door.

I didn’t see Monica’s son. I saw my husband’s.

“I don’t forgive what you did,” I said. “But Luke is Daniel’s son. He’s Ben’s brother. And I think we’ve all lost enough.” I held out the pie. “Maybe instead of fighting over what’s left of Daniel, we should try sharing it.”

Monica’s eyes filled with tears. Then she took the pie and stepped aside.

Luke was standing behind her.
