I stood in the driveway of the house where we had grown up and I watched until I couldn’t see his car anymore and then I went inside to keep sorting through the things our father had left.
I found the sketchbooks a week later.
Eight of them, in a box on the high shelf of his bedroom closet, the closet I had thought I had already gone through. The sketchbooks were the small kind, the kind that fit in a jacket pocket, the kind he had apparently carried for decades.
They were full.
Not of engineering drawings, though some of those were there — small, careful sketches of bridges and structural elements, the working notations of a man who thought in pictures. But also: us. Eric and me, dozens of times, from every year of our childhood and beyond. Small quick sketches, the kind you do from memory or from life when you have thirty seconds and a pencil, the kind that capture something true by not having time to be careful.
Eric at eight, laughing.
Me at eleven, the year our mother left, sitting on the back steps with a specific look I recognized as the look I still wore when I was trying not to cry.
Eric at sixteen, looking at something off-frame with a quality of attention that even the sketch captured perfectly.
The two of us at some family Christmas, Eric leaning into me in the way he always leaned into things, me with my hand on his arm.
Decades of us. Seen and remembered and kept.
On the inside cover of the first sketchbook, in the smallest, most careful version of his print, my father had written:
The things I couldn’t say, I drew.
I sat on the floor of his bedroom with eight sketchbooks in my lap.
I thought about a man who had spent his whole life learning to show up, and who had never quite learned to speak, and who had spent the months before he died building a structure to carry what he couldn’t say: hidden closets and letters in linings and paintings done over twenty-five years and a red suit ordered by measurements given over the phone by a man who knew he was running out of time.
He had found a way.
He had always found a way.
The minimum necessary structure to carry the maximum necessary weight.
He had calculated it down to the last detail.
He had been right about the load-bearing capacity.
It held.
The bridge is still there.
I walked across it last spring.
I took Eric.
We didn’t say much.
We didn’t need to.
The light was good.
It looked like it felt.
