Don’t worry.

But notice the thing I noticed.

Not once did anyone ask if I was healthy.

They asked if I was available.

Those are not the same word, and the difference is the whole story.

“We figured you’d move in by the end of the month,” she said. “It saves hiring someone, and it’s not like you’d have to give up much.”

I sat still and let all of it land.

Every word, the way you let a wave pass over you instead of fighting it.

I didn’t raise my voice. I didn’t tear up.
