“It’s not what it sounds like.”
“Your father just got caught stealing from a church. And you were going to pay for our wedding with money taken from your grieving sister.”
Chloe’s eyes filled. She reached for his hand. He stepped back, slid the engagement band off his finger, held it for a moment, and set it on the table. Gently. No throw, no scene. Just a man putting down something he couldn’t carry anymore.
“I was going to marry someone who doesn’t exist,” he said, and walked out the side door.
Chloe turned to Patricia for rescue, but Patricia was surrounded, Harris on one side and Mrs. Carol on the other, both talking at once. For the first time in her life, Chloe reached for her mother and found no one reaching back. The ring sat on the white tablecloth, catching the light.

Patricia was never charged. There wasn’t enough direct evidence; she’d been careful to sign nothing. But she lost something no court could restore. The neighbors stopped calling.
