The lesson wasn’t really about grass clippings. The lesson, the one I hope Gary actually learned, and the one I know for certain I learned, is this. Being reasonable is not the same as being a doormat. You can be calm and patient and kind and generous with second chances, and still, at the end of all that patience, have a floor beneath which you will not be pushed. The two things aren’t in conflict. In fact, the patience is what makes the floor so unassailable when you finally plant your feet on it.

I gave Gary every chance to keep it neighborly. He chose, over and over, not to. And so I stopped being the neighbor who absorbed his mess, and became the neighbor who kept perfect records and knew the municipal code, and it turned out that was a far more powerful thing to be than the neighbor who dumps something worse back over the fence in the dark.

My tomatoes have never been happier. My wife is firmly on my side. My brother-in-law respects me for the first time in eleven years. And I have never, not once, had to hold my nose in my own kitchen again.

Sometimes the best revenge really is just refusing to give someone the fight they expect, and instead, quietly, patiently, being so thoroughly in the right that the world itself takes your side.
