My eyes dropped farther down the page, and one sentence finally told me why Ava, Claire, and June had hidden it from me for four years.

We found this when we were eighteen, the line said. We decided you weren’t allowed to see it until we were old enough to tell you what it meant.

I read it twice.

Then a third time.

My hands were still shaking, and Ava had one hand around my forearm because I was sitting on the edge of the aisle like my legs no longer belonged to me.

Claire crouched beside me in her graduation gown.

June stood one step away, watching my face with the same serious expression she had worn onstage.

Ava saw it immediately.

Ava remembered calling one night after bombing an exam and hearing me say, “Okay. Tell me what happened,” before I ever asked what grade she got.

Claire remembered coming home after a breakup and finding the refrigerator stocked with the same cheap comfort food I had bought when she was thirteen and heartbroken for the first time.

June remembered an argument we had during her second year away when she told me I worried too much and hung up on me.

I remembered that one.

I had stared at my phone for five minutes, furious.

She did.

At 1:17 in the morning.

I answered before the second ring.

He wrote that he did love the girls.

I believed that part.
