“Your mother loved you more than anything.”
He began crying too.
We held each other in that dark basement for a long time.
Then we heard a noise upstairs.
A door slammed.
I froze.
Someone had entered the cottage.
Lucas looked at me.
“Who is it?”
I whispered,
“Stay behind me.”
Footsteps moved across the floor above us.
Slow.
Heavy.
Then Justin’s voice echoed down the staircase.
“Helena.”
I closed my eyes.
He had found us.
Justin appeared at the bottom of the stairs.
His face was calm.
Almost too calm.
“You should have listened to me.”
I stood between him and Lucas.
“You killed my daughter.”
He smiled.
“You don’t have proof.”
I held up the metal box.
His expression changed.
For the first time, I saw fear.
“You don’t understand what you’re holding.”
“I understand enough.”
“Give it to me.”
“No.”
He took one step forward.
I took one step back.
Then another voice came from behind him.
“Don’t move.”
Samuel.
And behind Samuel were two police officers.
Justin turned.
Samuel held up a phone.
“We have everything.”
Justin stared at him.
“You set me up.”
“No,” Samuel said.
“Your father did.”
Justin’s face went pale.
The officers arrested him.
As they led him away, he looked at me.
“You think this ends here?”
I looked directly into his eyes.
“No.”
I held Lucas’s hand.
“It ends with you.”
Months passed.
The investigation reopened.
The evidence from the cottage changed everything.
Justin was charged with financial crimes, obstruction, and eventually with the murder of Maria and Daniel.
The case took time.
There were hearings.
Courtrooms.
Old witnesses.
New evidence.
Painful memories.
But eventually, the truth came out.
Maria had not died in an accident.
She had been murdered because she knew too much.
And Mr. Christopher had spent the final years of his life making sure the truth would survive him.
As for me, I never returned to cleaning houses.
The inheritance allowed me to buy a small home.
Lucas had his own room.
There were books on the shelves.
Family photographs on the walls.
And for the first time in years, the refrigerator was never empty.
But I kept one thing from the mansion.
The framed photograph of Mr. Christopher.
I placed it above the fireplace.
Sometimes I still talked to him.
I told him about Lucas.
About school.
About the little things.
And every year, on the anniversary of Maria’s death, I placed flowers beneath his photograph too.
One evening, Lucas came home from school holding a letter.
“Grandma.”
“Yes?”
“This came for you.”
I opened it.
It was from the lawyer.
There was only one sentence.
Mr. Christopher’s final estate transfer has been completed. There is nothing left to hide.
I smiled through my tears.
Nothing left to hide.
For eighteen years, I had believed I was simply the woman who cleaned a mansion.
I thought my life had ended when I was dismissed and handed one week’s pay.
I thought losing that job meant losing the last piece of the family I had loved.
But I had been wrong.
Losing that job was the beginning.
Mr. Christopher had known he was running out of time.
He knew Justin would try to erase everything.

The woman who cleaned his floors.
