“I said I wasn’t his mother because I wanted you to believe the worst of me.”
“Why?”
“Because Daniel was already involved.”
“What do you mean?”
She looked at me.
“Daniel found out years ago.”
My blood ran cold.
“Found out what?”
“That his father was responsible for your parents’ deaths.”
Silence filled the room.
“Daniel knew?”
“Yes.”
“How long?”
“Almost ten years.”
I sat down.
Every conversation suddenly sounded different.
Every strange look.
Every unexplained trip.
Every time Daniel told me he was working late.
Every time he asked about my aunt’s house.
“He married me because of the house.”
Lorraine didn’t answer.
That was answer enough.
“Didn’t he?”
“At first.”
My eyes filled with tears.
“At first?”
“He believed the evidence was hidden here.”
“And then?”
“He fell in love with you.”
I laughed bitterly.
“That’s supposed to make me feel better?”
“No.”
She looked down.
“It isn’t an excuse.”
I wiped my eyes.
“Did he ever love me?”
“Yes.”
“Then why did he treat me like that?”
“Because he became afraid.”
“Afraid of what?”
“That you’d find out.”
I looked at the letter.
“The evidence.”
Lorraine nodded.
“Your aunt hid it before she died.”
“Where?”
“I don’t know.”
I stared at her.
“You said she knew where it was.”
“She did.”
“Then why don’t you?”
“Because Evelyn never trusted me again.”
For the first time, I understood.
My aunt hadn’t been hiding the truth from me because she didn’t love me.
She had been hiding it because she believed the truth could get me killed.
I stood.
“Where did my aunt keep her personal things?”
“In the study.”
I almost laughed.
“Of course.”
We went downstairs.
The police officers were still outside.
I told them Lorraine had given me information concerning the investigation.
Then I walked into my study.
Everything looked familiar.
My desk.
My books.
The old cabinet.
The painting my aunt had loved.
I remembered what Daniel had said years ago.
Your aunt had terrible taste.
I had laughed.
Now I stared at the painting.
It showed a blue house beside a lake.
Something about it suddenly bothered me.
I walked closer.
The frame was thicker than it should have been.
I touched the bottom edge.
It moved.
My heart stopped.
“Officer.”
One of the officers entered.
“Can you help me?”
He examined the frame.
A few minutes later, the painting was removed.
Behind it was a narrow compartment.
Inside was a metal box.
No lock.
No key.
Just a small brass latch.
I opened it.
Inside were documents.
Bank records.
Photographs.
Letters.
And one small cassette tape.
I stared at the tape.
“There’s a recorder in the desk,” I whispered.
We found it.
The tape was old, but it still worked.
My aunt’s voice filled the room.
Older.
Weaker.
But unmistakably hers.
“If you’re hearing this,” she said, “then I’m gone.”
I covered my mouth.
“I am sorry, sweetheart.”
Tears ran down my face.
“I wanted to tell you everything. Every day, I wanted to.”
The recording continued.
“But your parents asked me to keep you safe. They believed the people who were after them would eventually find you.”
There was a pause.
“I made mistakes.”
Her voice trembled.
“I trusted the wrong people. I lied to you. I even allowed Daniel into your life because I believed he had changed.”
I closed my eyes.
“He hadn’t.”
The room went silent except for the tape.
“Daniel knew about the evidence. His father taught him to find it. But somewhere along the way, Daniel began to regret what his family had done.”
I opened my eyes.
“That’s why I left the house to you,” my aunt continued. “Not because it was valuable.”
A pause.
“Because it was the safest place I could give you.”
The recording ended.
I stood there crying.
Not because the truth had destroyed my childhood.
Because for the first time, I understood my aunt’s silence.
She had loved me badly.
But she had loved me fiercely.
Daniel was arrested two days later.
Not for killing anyone.
There wasn’t enough evidence to accuse him of that.
But the financial documents revealed years of fraud, forged signatures, hidden accounts, and unauthorized transfers.
The money he had taken from me was only a small piece of it.
The larger scheme had begun long before I met him.
Lorraine cooperated with investigators.
She admitted what she had done in 1998.
Her confession helped reopen the investigation into my parents’ deaths.
Months later, authorities officially determined that the crash had not been an accident.
My parents had been murdered.
The people responsible were no longer alive to face trial.
But the truth was finally written down.
That mattered.
Daniel eventually sent me a letter.
I never answered.
He wrote that he was sorry.
He said he had loved me.
He said he had wanted to tell me the truth.
Maybe he had.
Maybe he hadn’t.
I realized something important.
An apology doesn’t erase what happened.
And love, by itself, doesn’t make betrayal harmless.
I sold nothing.
I didn’t leave the house.
Instead, I stayed.
I repainted the kitchen.
I replaced the curtains.

There was oatmeal on the stove.

I touched the glass.

My name was written on it in my aunt’s handwriting.

I stared at the words.
