My fifteen-year-old daughter kept telling me her stomach hurt and that she felt sick all the time.

My husband kept saying, “She’s faking it. Don’t throw money away on hospitals.”

I took her to the doctor behind his back anyway.

The second the doctor looked at the scan, his face changed.

Then he said very quietly, “There’s something inside her,” and I felt the whole room tilt under my feet.

I knew something was wrong before anyone else in our house wanted to admit it.

For several weeks, Maya had been fading in front of me in small, frightening ways that were easy to dismiss individually and impossible to ignore once I saw the pattern.

First came the nausea, usually in the mornings but sometimes during dinner, when she would suddenly press her lips together and push her plate away.

Then came the sharp pain low in her stomach, a pain that made her bend slightly when she thought nobody was watching.

She would reach for the hallway wall or the kitchen counter as though the floor had moved beneath her worn sneakers.

The girl who used to stay outside until dark kicking a soccer ball against the garage door had disappeared.

She stopped taking blurry sunset pictures over our mailbox.

She stopped laughing too loudly on FaceTime with her friends, the kind of laughter that once carried through her bedroom door and made me smile while folding laundry.

She stopped arguing about bedtime, stopped asking for rides, stopped leaving empty snack wrappers on the coffee table.

At dinner, she pushed pieces of chicken around her plate until they went cold.

I noticed every change because mothers learn the rhythms of their children long before those children understand they have rhythms.

I knew the sound of Maya’s normal footsteps on the stairs, the way she opened the refrigerator when she was hungry, and the particular sigh she made when homework had gone badly.

This was different.

Robert noticed the changes too, although he acted as if refusing to name them would make them disappear.

Whenever I brought up a doctor, he brought up money.

Robert never looked up from his phone.

“She’s putting on an act,” he said.

He scrolled with his thumb as though we were discussing a cable bill instead of our daughter.

“Teenagers make everything dramatic,” he said. “We’re not wasting money on hospitals because she wants attention.”

“I’m not trying to get attention,” she whispered.

Robert finally looked up, but not with concern.

“Maya is stressed about school,” he said to me, speaking as though she were not sitting there. “If you keep babying her, she’ll keep doing it.”

I tried to answer, but he cut me off.

But in Robert, money fear had become something colder.

So I looked at Maya.

I watched her fall asleep after school with her sneakers still on and her backpack sliding from one shoulder.

Tears had soaked a dark crescent into the edge of her pillow, and strands of hair clung to her damp cheek.

I helped Maya sit up and brought her water, but she could manage only a small sip.

She begged me not to wake Robert.

The request cut deeper than I expected because it told me she had already learned that being sick in our house required permission.

The next afternoon, while Robert was still at work, I drove to Maya’s school.

While I waited, I could hear locker doors closing in the hallway and a teacher reminding students not to run.

Ordinary sounds continued around me, which made my fear feel almost private.

Maya appeared a few minutes later with her backpack hanging loosely from one shoulder.

She walked slowly, one hand pressed beneath her hoodie.

The attendance clerk noticed and asked whether she was all right.

Saying it aloud steadied me.

Maya looked from the clerk to me, and I saw a flash of relief on her face.

Outside, I buckled her into our family SUV even though she had been fastening her own seat belt for years.

I drove straight to Riverside Medical Center without calling Robert.

Maya barely spoke during the drive.

“Are you mad at me?” she asked suddenly.

The question nearly made me miss the turn into the medical center.

The sticker made my stomach tighten because I could already hear Robert’s voice asking what everything would cost.

I signed anyway.

I answered questions about allergies, medications, previous conditions, and the length of her symptoms.

When I reached the box asking how severe the pain was, I looked at Maya.
