Austin appealed the decision, but he lost four months later.

The house was formally handed back to us in March of the following year, with a court official present to take a full inventory. Austin and Peyton had had months to find another place to live and were already residing in a small rented apartment. I chose not to attend the physical handover.

When Joshua opened the small room where I had slept for months, he found the sagging mattress, a thin blanket, and an unopened box of my medication left behind.
