I heard my husband say those words from the second floor while I stood frozen in front of the mirror, my hands icy cold.

Julian Cross had just stepped out of his black SUV at our mansion in Shaker Heights, looking flawless in his gray suit, as though he were on his way to accept an award instead of breaking my heart for the last time. Mrs. Martha, our longtime housekeeper, carefully asked if I would be coming downstairs.

My phone vibrated again, and Chloe was sending me a video from the living room. Chandeliers, glasses, music, and women dressed like they belonged in luxury magazines filled the screen.

The camera zoomed in on Julian, who was talking to several businessmen, looking cold, confident, and proud. Then Chloe’s hand appeared, adjusting his tie as if marking her territory. Finally, she looked at the camera and moved her lips silently to say: “It’s mine.”

The drive downtown was smooth and silent. While rain streaked the dark windows, I looked at my phone one last time. A deep, commanding voice boomed behind him.

The crowd parted instantly.

Arthur Vance stepped through the circle of onlookers. He was flanked by three senior partners from the city’s largest corporate law firm, along with the Chairman of Apex Group himself. Julian stared at the papers. “An… an audit?”

“Cross Logistics operates on three sub-contracts granted by Vance Global subsidiaries,” my father stated coldly. “As of four minutes ago, those contracts have been terminated. Your credit lines are frozen, your corporate accounts are seized pending investigation, and the mortgage on your Shaker Heights house has been called for immediate full payment.”

Julian’s phone began ringing frantically in his jacket pocket. Then Chloe’s phone rang. Then his assistant’s phone.

He didn’t answer. He knew what the calls were.

The grand ballroom went completely silent as Julian fell to his knees on the marble floor, the divorce papers scattered around his knees.

Chloe backed away from him, her face twisted in disgust and fear. She slipped the diamond ring off her finger, tossed it onto the floor beside him, and tried to slip into the crowd, but two hotel security guards intercepted her at the exit to escort her off the premises.

Julian looked up at me from the floor, weeping openly, his hands clutching the hem of my dress.

I looked down at the man I had spent three years trying to please. The man who had made me feel small, invisible, and worthless.

I turned my back on him.

My father offered me his arm. I took it, resting my hand comfortably over his sleeve.
