My mother-in-law, Linda, and I had never been close.
I’ve been married to her son, David, for fourteen years, and whenever she got the chance, she reminded him that he “could’ve chosen a better woman.”
“She never actually says anything terrible,” David once told me.

“You know what else is finished? The club membership I pay for. The salon account. Your spa weekends. The trips. The restaurant card.”
Linda blinked frosting from her eyelashes. “You can’t threaten your own mother!”
“I’m not threatening you. You have your income. Your house is fine. Your groceries are fine. Your actual needs are fine.”
He pointed at her designer purse.
