I gave up the life my wealthy parents had planned for me to marry the man I’d loved since high school. But on our wedding night, Leo looked at me with an expression that made my stomach drop.

He sat down beside me and finally, finally met my eyes.
“I’ve been keeping something from you for almost a year,” he said. “Something I started before I proposed.”

“I was scared that if I told you, you’d think I was doing it for the wrong reasons. Or you’d stop me. And I didn’t want you to stop me.”

He didn’t answer with words. Instead, my husband reached under the bed and pulled out his beat-up duffel.
“I was scared.”
He dug past a folded flannel until he came up with an envelope.
It was worn at the corners as if he’d been carrying it around for a while. Thicker than a letter. My stomach turned over.
“What is this?”
“I want you to open it. But before you do, I need you to know something.”
“Okay?”
“I love you. Whatever you think this is in the next ten seconds, remember that first.”
That wasn’t reassuring. That was the kind of thing people said before they wrecked you.

I set the passbook down carefully, as if it might tear. I hated that my first thought had been another woman. I hated that a small, mean voice in my head, my mother’s voice, had whispered, “Of course, of course there’s a catch.”
“There’s more,” my husband said.
I looked up, dreading whatever was to come.
“Three months ago, I went to see your mom.”

Leo took my hand. “Because I didn’t want it to feel like a rescue from your parents. I wanted to tell you tonight, as your husband. Not as the guy fixing what your parents broke.”
I pressed the deed against my chest and let myself cry openly.
