It was raining when I heard the knock.
Not a hard knock. The hesitant kind, the kind that isn’t sure it has the right to be there.
I opened the door and my mother was standing on my porch in the dark, soaked from the knees down, wearing her house slippers, clutching two grocery bags against her chest like she was afraid someone might take them.
The first thing she said was, “Please don’t call Scott yet.”

“Mom, what happened?”
She looked past me into the house. “Can I come in first?”
I stepped aside.

Scott had been pushing for months.
You shouldn’t be alone all the time. You have that whole house for one person. We have an empty guest room. Just try it for a month.
He promised everything. Her own room and her own bathroom. No rent. No obligations. She could come and go as she wanted. He made it sound like an invitation to rest.
Eventually, Mom agreed.
The first week, she called and sounded happy. Light, even.
Then the calls got shorter. Every time I asked how things were going, she said fine and changed the subject. It had the practiced quality of someone who has decided not to tell you something.
I stopped by one afternoon without calling ahead.
Mom was standing in Scott’s kitchen folding a mountain of laundry. There was a pot simmering on the stove. She smiled when she saw me — the tight, bright kind of smile that means the opposite of what it’s showing.
“Are you cooking dinner too?” I asked.
“I’m just helping out.”
Then my nephew came downstairs without looking up from his phone. “Grandma, did you wash my soccer uniform yet?”

Later, when we were alone, I asked if Scott and Megan were taking advantage of her.

“Mom, you still have your house.”
“I know.”

I regretted that now, sitting across from her in my kitchen while she dripped rainwater onto my floor in her slippers.
“What exactly did Megan say tonight?”
Mom’s hands tightened around the mug. “She came home and asked why the laundry wasn’t finished.”

“I told her I was tired.”

“Then she said she was sick of having another person in the house to take care of.”

Mom looked embarrassed. “I said the same thing.”

“Then?”
“I said maybe I should leave.” Mom’s voice cracked. “Megan said, Fine. Go. Then she went into my room and started throwing my clothes into the hallway.”
I stared at her. “She threw your clothes into the hallway.”
“Not all of them.”
“That is not better.”
“I put what I could into grocery bags.” She glanced down at the bags beside her chair. “I couldn’t find my suitcase.”
“Where was Scott?”
“Still at work.”
“Why didn’t you call me right away?”
She looked at me steadily. “Because I knew you’d call Scott.”
“I absolutely am going to call Scott.”
“Not yet.”
That was the second time she’d said it. Something in her voice made me stop.
“Why?”
She looked down at her tea for a long moment.
Then she said, “Because there is something else.”
“Scott wants me to sell the house.”
I frowned. “I know he’s mentioned downsizing—”
“No.” She shook her head. “He wants me to sell it. Now. He had a real estate agent come look at it last week.”
“He what?”
“He said it was just to see what it might be worth.”
“Without telling you? Without telling me?”
“He kept saying I didn’t need it anymore.”
“He doesn’t get to decide that.”
“I know.”
I looked at her. “Do you?”
She looked hurt. I regretted the tone immediately.
“I’m sorry, Mom.” I reached forward. “I just — I need to understand what’s been happening over there.”
She nodded. Took a breath. “I finally asked him why he cared so much about the house.”
“And?”
“He wouldn’t answer at first. I kept asking.” She rubbed her thumb in slow circles against the mug. “He told me he’s in debt.”
The room went quiet.
“What kind of debt?”
“He wouldn’t say exactly. Loans. Credit cards. He said things got away from him.” She looked ashamed just repeating it — the way mothers do when their children have done something that reflects on them somehow. “He said if I sold the house, I could help him get back on his feet.”
“He actually said that.”
“Not right away. But eventually.”
I stood up and walked to the other side of the room because I needed somewhere to put the anger before I said something useless with it.
“So he gets you comfortable living with him. Convinces you the house is more trouble than it’s worth. Then asks you to sell it and hand him the money.”
Mom looked at the table. “I told him I needed to think about it.”
“Good.” I turned back. “Because you still have a place to live, Mom.”

“I don’t.” She said it quietly. “I couldn’t get in.”
“What do you mean?”
“The back lock was sticking before I moved. Scott said he’d replace all of them while I was gone. For safety.”

“Mom.” I sat down. “That’s your house. He cannot lock you out of your own house.”
“My name is on the deed.”
“Then tomorrow, we go get your keys.”
She shook her head.
“Why?”

I looked at her.
“I want the house protected,” she said. “I don’t want Scott thinking he can pressure me until I give in. I want it to go to you.”
The words took a second to settle.
“You want to transfer the house to my name?”
She looked around my living room. “I’m getting older, Laura. I’m not helpless. But managing the house alone is harder than it used to be. Some days I worry about being there by myself.”

We went to Scott’s house a few days later.

“I was going to fix it.”
“By selling your mother’s house.”
“I thought—”
